Acura common problems
Honda dependability with more tech — a few shared engine and transmission items to know.
Acura is Honda's luxury brand and shares much of its mechanical DNA, which means strong reliability overall. The issues that come up are mostly the same ones that affect related Hondas, plus the extra electronics that come with a premium car.
Here's what we see on Acuras.
Reliability: very good. Shares Honda engineering, with a few known items.
Common Acura problems
The faults we actually see on Acura vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
Automatic transmission (older V6 TL/MDX)
Some early-2000s V6 automatics were failure-prone across Honda/Acura. On an older TL or MDX, keep fluid service current and inspect before buying.
VTC actuator rattle
A brief cold-start rattle on some engines points to the VTC actuator — a known, diagnosable item.
Timing belt (older V6)
Older V6 engines use a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule, usually with the water pump. Overdue replacement is a real risk — confirm the history.
Suspension and electronics
Control-arm bushings and the usual luxury-feature electronics wear with age — routine items.
When to get your Acura looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a Acura
- On an older V6 Acura, confirm the timing belt and water pump history — it's a scheduled must-do.
- Keep transmission fluid serviced on older V6 automatics.
- A cold-start rattle is worth an early look.
- Otherwise, Honda-grade dependability with routine care.
On repair costs
Acuras are reasonable to keep for a luxury-badged car, thanks to Honda underpinnings and common parts. The planned big-ticket item on older V6s is the timing belt and water pump - a scheduled must-do that's far cheaper than a failure.
What our winters and roads do to a Acura
Acura shares Honda's hardware, so it takes Calgary much the same way - reliable overall, with the cold and salt driving the usual battery, brake and suspension wear. On older V6 models the timing belt is the item that must be kept on schedule regardless of climate. If it shares the 1.5T, the oil-dilution note applies here too.

Acura problems — FAQ
Is Acura just a fancy Honda?
Mechanically they share a lot, which is good news for reliability — you get Honda-grade engineering with more features. Most Acura issues mirror the related Honda, plus the extra electronics of a premium car.
Does my older Acura have a timing belt?
Many older V6 Acuras (TL, MDX, RL) use a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule, typically along with the water pump. If you can't confirm it was done, have it checked — a failure can be serious.
Are older Acura transmissions reliable?
Mostly, but certain early-2000s V6 automatics were weak. On an older V6 Acura, keep the fluid serviced and get a pre-purchase inspection.
