Nissan common problems
Good cars with one headline issue you need to understand before you buy: the CVT.
Nissan makes some genuinely good vehicles, but the brand's reliability conversation is dominated by one thing: the CVT (continuously variable transmission) used across much of the lineup. Understanding it is the single most important thing before buying a used Nissan.
Here's the CVT story and the other items we see.
Reliability: mixed — strongly tied to the CVT transmission on many models.
Common Nissan problems
The faults we actually see on Nissan vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
CVT transmission (the big one)
Many Nissans — Altima, Sentra, Rogue, Murano, Pathfinder and others — use a CVT that can overheat, judder, whine or fail, sometimes earlier than you'd expect. Symptoms include shuddering, hesitation, a whining noise, or slipping. A failing CVT is a major expense, so a pre-purchase inspection on any used Nissan with one is strongly recommended.
Timing chain (some engines)
Certain VQ and QR engines can develop timing-chain rattle with age. A rattle on start-up is worth diagnosing before it becomes serious.
Fuel-level sender
Inaccurate fuel gauges from a failing sender are a common, minor Nissan annoyance.
Suspension and brakes
Normal wear items that Calgary roads and salt accelerate.
When to get your Nissan looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a Nissan
- The CVT is the make-or-break item — get a used Nissan inspected and the transmission assessed before buying.
- Keep CVT fluid serviced if you own one; heat is its enemy, so avoid heavy towing.
- A start-up rattle on VQ/QR engines is worth an early diagnosis.
- Otherwise, routine maintenance and normal wear.
On repair costs
Routine Nissan maintenance is affordable, but the CVT is the wildcard: a replacement is a major expense. That one component drives the whole value equation on a used Nissan, which is why a transmission assessment before buying matters so much.
What our winters and roads do to a Nissan
Heat is a CVT's enemy, and while Calgary's cold isn't the issue, stop-start winter driving, hills and any towing all add load. If you own a Nissan with a CVT, keeping the fluid serviced is the single best thing you can do for it here. Salt and cold take care of the usual brake and suspension wear.

Nissan problems — FAQ
Should I avoid a Nissan because of the CVT?
Not necessarily — many hold up fine, especially when the fluid is serviced and the car isn't abused. But the CVT is expensive if it fails, so a pre-purchase inspection and a transmission assessment are essential on any used Nissan with one.
What are the symptoms of a failing Nissan CVT?
Shuddering or juddering (especially at steady speed), hesitation when accelerating, a whining or droning noise, slipping, or overheating warnings. If you notice any of these, have it checked promptly.
Can you service a Nissan CVT?
Yes — CVT fluid service on schedule is one of the best things you can do to extend its life, and we can diagnose symptoms if something feels off.
