Honda common problems

Reliable cars with a few specific things to know — including one that matters more in Calgary's cold.

Honda builds genuinely reliable, efficient cars, and most owners get long trouble-free service. But there are a handful of known issues worth understanding before they catch you out — and one of them is more relevant in Calgary than almost anywhere.

Here's what we see on Hondas, and what to keep an eye on.

Reliability: very good. A few engine- and transmission-specific items to watch.

What we see

Common Honda problems

The faults we actually see on Honda vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.

1.5T oil dilution (cold-climate concern)

On the 1.5L turbo engine (Civic, CR-V, Accord), short trips in very cold weather can let fuel dilute the oil before the engine fully warms — exactly the kind of driving Calgary winters encourage. Watch oil level and smell, keep up with oil changes, and let the engine warm properly.

Automatic transmission (older V6 models)

Some early-2000s V6 automatics were failure-prone. On older Accords, Odysseys and Pilots, regular fluid service matters — and a pre-purchase check is worth it.

VTC actuator rattle on cold start

A brief rattle on a cold start on some engines points to the VTC actuator. It's a known item we can diagnose and address.

AC compressor and suspension

AC compressor failures and worn rear suspension/control-arm bushings show up with age — routine wear, straightforward to fix.

Signs to watch for

When to get your Honda looked at

Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.

A rising oil level or a fuel smell in the oil on a 1.5T (dilution)
Harsh, slipping or delayed shifts on an older V6 automatic
A brief rattle on cold start-up (VTC actuator)
Weak or warm air conditioning (compressor)
Clunks from the rear suspension over bumps
What to be ready for

Buying or owning a Honda

On repair costs

Hondas are generally affordable to keep - parts are common and most jobs are routine. The exceptions are a neglected older V6 automatic, or ignoring 1.5T oil dilution until it causes engine wear; both are far cheaper to catch early.

In Calgary

What our winters and roads do to a Honda

Honda's 1.5T oil-dilution concern is more relevant in Calgary than almost anywhere, because our winters mean exactly the short, cold trips that cause it - the engine never gets hot enough to burn off fuel that mixes into the oil. Keeping oil changes current, watching the level and letting the car warm up all help. Salt and cold drive the usual wear items too.

Common questions

Honda problems — FAQ

Is the Honda 1.5T oil dilution a real problem in Calgary?

It can be. The concern is worst with repeated short trips in very cold weather, which Calgary winters encourage, because the engine doesn't get hot enough to boil off fuel that's mixed into the oil. Watching your oil level, keeping oil changes current and letting the car warm up all help. We can check it for you.

Which Honda models are affected?

The 1.5L turbo appears in recent Civic, CR-V and Accord, among others. Not every car has trouble, but it's worth being aware of if you do a lot of short, cold drives.

Are older Honda automatics reliable?

Most are fine, but certain early-2000s V6 automatics were weak. On an older V6 Honda, keep the fluid serviced and get a pre-purchase inspection before buying.
