Tesla common problems
No engine or transmission — a different set of items, and an honest note on what we can help with.
A Tesla has no engine, gearbox or exhaust, so the usual problem list doesn't apply — the electric drivetrain is mechanically simple and generally long-lived. The common issues are elsewhere: build quality, suspension, the 12-volt battery, and electronics.
We'll also be straight about scope: there's plenty a good independent shop can help a Tesla owner with, and some high-voltage work that belongs with a Tesla specialist. Here's both.
Reliability: drivetrain is simple; build quality, suspension and 12V items are the common ones.
Common Tesla problems
The faults we actually see on Tesla vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
Suspension (control arms, clunks)
Upper control arms and suspension bushings are a common source of clunks and wear, especially on earlier Model S/X and on rough, salted roads. Straightforward to diagnose and replace.
12-volt battery
Teslas still use a conventional 12V battery for the low-voltage systems, and it fails like any other — often with little warning and odd electronic behaviour. A common, inexpensive item.
Build quality & trim
Panel gaps, trim pieces, window regulators and door handles (on some Model S) are recurring complaints — annoying but usually not serious.
Electronics (older MCU) & HV battery
Older Model S/X could suffer MCU/eMMC failure (screen issues). The high-voltage battery degrades slowly over years — a long-term consideration, not a frequent failure.
When to get your Tesla looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a Tesla
- Expect suspension and 12V-battery items to be the common, routine ones.
- Build-quality and trim niggles are common — inspect panel fit and features on a used one.
- On an older Model S/X, factor in possible MCU and gradual HV-battery degradation.
- Tires wear fast on heavy, instant-torque EVs — budget accordingly.
On repair costs
The items we handle - tires, alignment, brakes, suspension, the 12V battery - are affordable and routine. The expensive, specialist items (high-voltage battery, drive unit, older MCU) are the exception, and we'll tell you honestly when something falls outside what an independent shop should take on.
What our winters and roads do to a Tesla
An EV sidesteps a lot of Calgary's engine-related winter headaches, but the cold cuts driving range noticeably, is hard on the 12V battery, and road salt still attacks suspension and brakes. The heavy, instant-torque drivetrain wears tires quickly, so rotation and alignment matter more here.
We're an independent shop in Calgary SE that services every make — with factory-level diagnostics, honest written estimates, and advice on what's urgent versus what can wait.

Tesla problems — FAQ
Can an independent shop work on a Tesla?
For a lot of it, yes — tires and alignment, brakes, suspension, the 12V battery, cabin and general inspection are all things a good independent shop can handle. We're happy to help with those.
Do you service the high-voltage battery or drive unit?
No — high-voltage battery and drive-unit internal work is specialized and belongs with a Tesla-authorized or dedicated EV specialist. We'll tell you honestly when something falls into that category rather than take on work that isn't ours to do.
Why do Tesla tires wear so quickly?
EVs are heavy and deliver instant torque, which is hard on tires, and alignment matters more as a result. Regular rotation and a proper alignment — both of which we do — help them last.
