Ford common problems
Popular trucks and SUVs with a handful of well-known items to check.
Ford's trucks and SUVs are everywhere in Alberta for good reason, and the lineup is generally capable. But there are several well-documented issues by engine and transmission that are worth knowing before you buy — especially on the popular EcoBoost engines and recent automatics.
Here's what we see on Fords.
Reliability: average to good — model- and engine-specific items to watch.
Common Ford problems
The faults we actually see on Ford vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
EcoBoost cam phasers (3.5L)
A rattle on cold start-up on the 3.5L EcoBoost often points to worn cam phasers — a known, documented repair. Diagnose it early rather than ignoring the noise.
10-speed transmission
The 10-speed automatic (F-150 and others) can shift harshly or shudder at low speed; software updates address some of it. Have it assessed if it's not shifting cleanly.
PowerShift dual-clutch (older Focus/Fiesta)
The older PowerShift automatic was notoriously troublesome — shuddering and jerky shifts. On an affected used car, go in very cautiously and get it inspected.
EcoBoost intake carbon & turbos
Direct-injection EcoBoost engines build intake carbon over time and the turbos add complexity — worth checking on a higher-mileage example.
Water pump (internal, some V6)
Some Ford V6 engines use an internal, timing-driven water pump; a failure can be a bigger job than a typical pump. Watch for coolant loss.
When to get your Ford looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a Ford
- On a 3.5L EcoBoost, listen for a cold-start rattle (cam phasers) and address it early.
- On a 10-speed, confirm it shifts cleanly and that software updates are current.
- Avoid or carefully inspect older PowerShift-equipped Focus/Fiesta models.
- On affected V6 engines, be aware the internal water pump is a larger repair.
On repair costs
Routine Ford service is affordable and parts are everywhere. The costs that bite are the engine-specific ones - cam phasers, an internal water pump, or a troublesome PowerShift automatic - which is why confirming the history and a pre-purchase inspection pay off on a used one.
What our winters and roads do to a Ford
Ford's trucks are built for exactly this climate, but Calgary still finds the weak spots: the cold makes a cam-phaser rattle more obvious on a 3.5 EcoBoost, salt attacks brakes, suspension and (on older steel-bodied trucks) the frame, and short trips bring on intake carbon. The aluminum-bodied F-150 resists body corrosion well.

Ford problems — FAQ
What is the cam phaser rattle on the Ford 3.5 EcoBoost?
It's a rattling sound, usually on a cold start, caused by worn variable-timing cam phasers. It's a known, documented issue with a defined repair. Catching it early is better than letting it worsen — we can diagnose it for you.
Is the Ford 10-speed transmission reliable?
It's generally okay, but some owners report harsh shifts or a low-speed shudder, and there are software updates to address it. On a used truck, confirm it shifts cleanly and the updates are current.
Should I avoid a used Focus or Fiesta?
If it has the older PowerShift dual-clutch automatic, be very cautious — they were troublesome. A manual or a thoroughly inspected example is a safer bet. Get any one checked before buying.
