Porsche common problems
Durable when serviced right — here are the model-specific items to know.
A Porsche is durable when it's serviced properly — the right fluids, cooling on schedule, brakes set up correctly, and attention to the known weak points on each model. That's how these cars stay reliable and hold their value.
Here's what commonly comes up on a Porsche and what to be ready for. For how we service them, see our Porsche page.
Reliability: good when properly maintained — model-specific weak points to know.
Common Porsche problems
The faults we actually see on Porsche vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
Cooling & coolant pipes
Coolant pipe and cooling-system service is important on these engines — addressed before a leak becomes overheating.
IMS bearing (older M96/M97)
On older flat-six engines the intermediate-shaft (IMS) bearing is a known failure point; we advise on inspection and options so there are no surprises.
Bore scoring (some engines)
Certain older flat-six engines can develop cylinder bore scoring; a listen and a borescope inspection on a used one is worthwhile.
PDK & brakes
PDK transmission service and proper brake work — including the larger brake packages — done to Porsche spec.
Suspension & alignment
Suspension refresh and a precise alignment so the car drives the way Porsche intended.
When to get your Porsche looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a Porsche
- On an older flat-six, factor in an IMS inspection and a conversation about options.
- Budget for cooling-system and coolant-pipe service to prevent overheating.
- Keep fluids, brakes and alignment to Porsche spec.
- A pre-purchase inspection on a used Porsche is strongly recommended.
On repair costs
Porsche parts and service are premium, and some items (an IMS repair, major cooling work) are significant — which is exactly why a pre-purchase inspection and proper maintenance pay off. An independent specialist still saves meaningfully versus the dealer.
What our winters and roads do to a Porsche
Calgary's cold and salt are hard on any Porsche — batteries, cooling, brakes and suspension all feel it, and a weekend car that sits needs the right storage and cold-start care. We service with that in mind, whether it's a daily driver or a summer-only car.
We're an independent shop in Calgary SE that services every make — with factory-level diagnostics, honest written estimates, and advice on what's urgent versus what can wait.

Porsche problems — FAQ
What is the IMS bearing concern?
On certain older M96/M97 flat-six engines (Boxster, Cayman, 911), the intermediate-shaft bearing can fail, which is serious. If you have one of these cars, an inspection and a conversation about options is worthwhile — we give you an honest assessment.
Are Porsches reliable?
Properly maintained, yes — they're more durable than their exotic reputation suggests. The key is staying on top of cooling and the model-specific weak points, and buying a used one only after a proper inspection.
Do you do Porsche diagnostics?
The Cayenne, Macan and Panamera share platform architecture with VW and Audi, which we diagnose with factory ODIS. For the sports cars we focus on correct service and repair; if a job needs capability beyond ours, we'll tell you honestly rather than guess.
