BMW common problems
Great to drive, specific to maintain — here's what goes wrong and what to be ready for.
BMWs are rewarding to drive and specific to keep right. Most of what goes wrong is well understood — oil leaks and cooling lead the list — and caught early it's routine maintenance rather than expensive repair. The cars that get expensive are the neglected ones.
Here's what commonly comes up on a BMW and what to be ready for. For how we service them, see our BMW page.
Reliability: good when maintained properly — oil-leak and cooling items are the classics.
Common BMW problems
The faults we actually see on BMW vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
Oil leaks
Valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets are the usual sources. Routine to fix when caught early, but oil dripping onto hot parts or a low level can cause real damage.
Cooling system
The plastic expansion tank, water pump and thermostat are known, time-sensitive failure points. A slow coolant loss is the sign to have the system pressure-tested before it overheats.
VANOS & timing chain
Timing-chain and VANOS concerns on N20/N26 and other engines — a start-up rattle is worth diagnosing before it becomes serious.
Carbon build-up
Direct-injection intake valves collect carbon over time, costing power and smoothness; walnut-blasting restores them.
Coding & electrical
When modules or the battery are replaced, the car needs coding and registration with factory software — skip it and you get warning lights and faults.
When to get your BMW looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a BMW
- Budget for cooling and oil-leak maintenance as part of normal BMW ownership.
- Use the correct oil and keep to proper service intervals.
- Factory diagnostics (ISTA) matter — parts often need coding when replaced.
- A pre-purchase inspection with a fault-memory scan is well worth it on a used BMW.
On repair costs
European parts and the diagnostics these cars need cost more than a mainstream vehicle, so budget accordingly. The upside is real: an independent specialist saves meaningfully versus the dealer, and catching oil and cooling items early avoids the big bills.
What our winters and roads do to a BMW
Calgary is hard on a BMW: -30 cold stresses batteries, cooling and seals, salt attacks brakes and suspension, and short winter trips bring on intake carbon and oil contamination. Block heaters, battery care and a cooling check before the deep cold go a long way here.
We're an independent shop in Calgary SE that services every make — with factory-level diagnostics, honest written estimates, and advice on what's urgent versus what can wait.

BMW problems — FAQ
Are BMWs expensive to maintain?
They cost more than a mainstream car — European parts and proper diagnostics aren't cheap. But at an independent specialist with the factory software, you get dealer-level work without the dealer markup, and staying ahead of the oil and cooling items keeps costs predictable.
What are the most common BMW problems?
Oil leaks (valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets) and cooling-system failures (expansion tank, water pump, thermostat) are the classics, along with carbon build-up on direct-injection engines and the coding needs when parts are replaced.
Should I get a used BMW inspected?
Definitely — a pre-purchase inspection with a factory fault-memory scan reveals stored faults and pending issues the dashboard won't show, which is exactly what you want to know before buying a used BMW.
