Kia common problems

Great value and warranty — with the same couple of items to check as its Hyundai cousins.

Kia has improved enormously and offers strong value with a long warranty. It shares engines and platforms with Hyundai, which means the same strengths — and the same two things to check on certain years.

Here's what we see on Kias.

Reliability: much improved; check the GDI engine and theft items on affected years.

What we see

Common Kia problems

The faults we actually see on Kia vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.

Theta II GDI engine

The shared 2.0T and 2.4L GDI engines on certain years can suffer oil consumption and, in worse cases, bearing failure and knock — covered by recalls and extended warranties on many cars. Check the campaign status and watch the oil.

Theft vulnerability (2015–2021)

Like Hyundai, some Kias from these years lacked an immobilizer and were targeted. Confirm the anti-theft software update and consider a steering lock.

Carbon build-up (GDI)

Intake carbon accumulates on direct-injection engines over time — worth checking on higher-mileage cars.

Suspension and brakes

Normal wear accelerated by Alberta roads and salt — routine service items.

Signs to watch for

When to get your Kia looked at

Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.

The oil level dropping, or a knock or tick from the engine (Theta GDI)
A recall or anti-theft update not yet applied (2015-2021)
Rough running or lost power on a GDI engine (carbon)
Signs of theft-attempt damage around the ignition or column
Clunks or uneven tire wear from suspension
What to be ready for

Buying or owning a Kia

On repair costs

Kia is cheap to run day-to-day with affordable parts. The expensive scenario is a Theta engine failure on an affected year, so the campaign status and oil checks on a used one are the key cost protection.

In Calgary

What our winters and roads do to a Kia

Kia shares Hyundai's engines, so the same two checks apply here - the Theta GDI engine status and, on 2015-2021 models, the anti-theft update. Calgary's cold and salt handle the rest of the wear. A newer Kia's long warranty is a genuine benefit as long as you keep documented service.

Common questions

Kia problems — FAQ

Are Kia and Hyundai the same mechanically?

They share a lot of engineering, including engines and platforms. That's why the same GDI engine and theft items apply to certain years of both brands — and why both have improved so much on quality.

Should I avoid a used Kia?

Not at all — many are excellent value. Just check the specific car's Theta engine campaign status, confirm the anti-theft update on 2015–2021 models, and get a pre-purchase inspection like any used car.

Can you service a Kia?

Yes — maintenance, diagnostics and repair, and a pre-purchase inspection on a used one. We can flag the known items so you buy informed.
