Hyundai common problems
Strong value and warranty, with a couple of important things to know before you buy.
Hyundai has come a long way on quality and backs its cars with a strong warranty. Most models are dependable — but there are two things every used-Hyundai buyer should understand: the Theta GDI engine issues on certain years, and a theft vulnerability on some 2015–2021 models.
Here's what we see and what to watch.
Reliability: much improved, but the Theta GDI engine is the key item to check.
Common Hyundai problems
The faults we actually see on Hyundai vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
Theta II GDI engine (the big one)
The 2.0T and 2.4L GDI engines on certain years are known for oil consumption and, in worse cases, bearing failure and engine knock — the subject of recalls and extended warranties. On an affected model, check the recall and campaign status, watch the oil level closely, and listen for a knock.
Theft vulnerability (2015–2021)
Some Hyundais from these years lack an engine immobilizer and became targets of a well-publicized theft method. Check whether the anti-theft software update has been applied and consider a steering lock.
Carbon build-up (GDI)
Direct-injection engines accumulate intake carbon over time — worth checking on a higher-mileage car that feels down on power.
Suspension and brakes
Normal wear that Calgary roads and salt accelerate — routine to service.
When to get your Hyundai looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a Hyundai
- On a used Hyundai, check the Theta engine recall/campaign status and monitor oil consumption.
- On a 2015–2021 model, confirm the anti-theft update and consider extra security.
- The long warranty is a real plus on a newer car — keep records to protect it.
- Budget for normal wear items accelerated by Calgary conditions.
On repair costs
Everyday Hyundai costs are low and parts are affordable. The one item that can be expensive is a Theta engine failure - which is exactly why checking the recall/campaign status and oil consumption on a used one matters so much.
What our winters and roads do to a Hyundai
The Theta GDI engine concern isn't climate-specific, but the theft vulnerability on some 2015-2021 models is worth taking seriously anywhere, Calgary included - confirm the anti-theft update. Otherwise the cold and salt drive the usual battery, brake and suspension wear, and the long warranty is a real plus on a newer car.

Hyundai problems — FAQ
Which Hyundai engines have problems?
The Theta II GDI engines (2.0T and 2.4L) on certain years are the main concern — oil consumption and, in worse cases, bearing failure. Many were covered by recalls and extended warranties, so check the specific car's campaign status. We can help you assess one.
Is my Hyundai easy to steal?
Some 2015–2021 models lacked an immobilizer and were targeted by a known theft method. Check whether the manufacturer's anti-theft software update has been applied; a visible steering lock also helps deter it.
Does the warranty require dealer service?
No — in Canada you can service at an independent shop without voiding the warranty, as long as correct parts and procedures are used and documented. Keep your records and your coverage stays intact.
