Dodge common problems

Characterful performance and family haulers — sharing engines (and items) with RAM and Chrysler.

Dodge shares its engines and much of its electronics with RAM and Chrysler, so the Charger, Challenger and Durango carry the same strengths and the same known items. The engine to watch depends on whether it's a Hemi V8 or a Pentastar V6.

Here's what we see on Dodges.

Reliability: average — Hemi/Pentastar engine items and electrical quirks to watch.

What we see

Common Dodge problems

The faults we actually see on Dodge vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.

Hemi lifter/camshaft (MDS)

The Hemi V8 with cylinder deactivation (MDS) can develop lifter and camshaft wear — a tick or misfire is the warning. Diagnose it early before it spreads.

3.6 Pentastar (V6)

The common 3.6L Pentastar can develop a rocker-arm/lifter tick and oil-cooler/filter-housing leaks over time — worth checking on higher-mileage cars.

Electrical gremlins (TIPM)

Older models could suffer electrical faults traced to the TIPM power module — odd behaviour from lights, windows or starting. Proper diagnosis beats guessing.

Brakes and suspension

The heavier and performance models go through brakes, and suspension wears on Alberta roads — routine wear items.

Signs to watch for

When to get your Dodge looked at

Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.

A tick or misfire on a Hemi (MDS lifter/cam)
A top-end tick or oil leak on a 3.6 Pentastar
Odd electrical behaviour (TIPM) on older models
Quicker brake wear on the performance models
Clunks or uneven tire wear from suspension
What to be ready for

Buying or owning a Dodge

On repair costs

Routine Dodge service is affordable with common, shared parts. The costs that add up are the Hemi lifter/cam item and the Pentastar's oil-cooler leaks; older-model electrical faults traced to the TIPM are the other thing to budget for.

In Calgary

What our winters and roads do to a Dodge

A Dodge takes Calgary much like its RAM and Chrysler siblings - cold and salt drive brake, suspension and corrosion wear, and the performance models go through brakes and tires faster on winter roads. The Hemi and Pentastar engine items aren't climate-specific but still need watching.

We're an independent shop in Calgary SE that services every make — with factory-level diagnostics, honest written estimates, and advice on what's urgent versus what can wait.

Common questions

Dodge problems — FAQ

Is the Dodge Hemi reliable?

It's a strong engine, but the cylinder-deactivation (MDS) versions can develop lifter and camshaft wear with age. A tick or misfire is the sign to have it checked early, before it causes more damage.

What's the issue with the 3.6 Pentastar?

It's a generally decent V6, but watch for a rocker-arm/lifter tick and oil-cooler or filter-housing leaks as it ages. Catching those early keeps it healthy — we can check yours.

Why does my older Dodge have random electrical faults?

On older models, odd electrical behaviour often traces to the TIPM (the integrated power module). It needs proper diagnosis rather than swapping parts — we can pinpoint it.
