Cadillac common problems
GM luxury — sharing hardware with its trucks, plus luxury-feature complexity.
Cadillac is GM's luxury division and shares engines and platforms with its trucks and SUVs — so the Escalade carries the same V8 concern as a Chevy or GMC, while the cars and the luxury features add their own items.
Here's what we see on Cadillacs.
Reliability: average — the V8 lifter item, air suspension and electronics to watch.
Common Cadillac problems
The faults we actually see on Cadillac vehicles in the shop — what causes them, and why they matter.
AFM/DFM V8 lifter failure (Escalade)
The 5.3L/6.2L V8s with cylinder deactivation can suffer a collapsed lifter — misfire, ticking, rough running. On an Escalade, diagnose any misfire or tick promptly.
Air / magnetic ride suspension
Models with air suspension or Magnetic Ride Control can need compressor, strut or shock service over time — a manageable but real luxury item.
Infotainment (older CUE)
The older CUE touchscreen system was known for unresponsive or cracking screens — a common older-Cadillac annoyance.
Transmission & older Northstar
The 8-/10-speed automatics can shudder (fluid service helps), and the older Northstar V8 had head-gasket and oil concerns on high-mileage cars.
When to get your Cadillac looked at
Catch these early and most are routine. Leave them, and they turn into the expensive repairs — so if you notice any of these, book a look.
Buying or owning a Cadillac
- On an Escalade, treat any V8 misfire or tick as a priority (AFM/DFM lifter).
- Budget for eventual air/magnetic suspension service on equipped models.
- On older cars, expect CUE infotainment quirks and check Northstar V8 history.
- Confirm the transmission shifts cleanly with no shudder.
On repair costs
Cadillac costs run higher than mainstream GM because of the luxury systems - air/magnetic suspension and electronics are the budget items. On the Escalade, the AFM/DFM V8 lifter failure is the big-ticket engine risk to screen for.
What our winters and roads do to a Cadillac
A Cadillac feels Calgary's winter in its luxury systems most - air and magnetic-ride suspension work harder in the cold, batteries and brakes take the usual hit, and salt attacks the underbody. The Escalade's shared GM V8 means the lifter item applies here as on any GM truck.

Cadillac problems — FAQ
Does the Cadillac Escalade have the GM V8 lifter problem?
Yes — it uses the same 5.3L/6.2L V8s with cylinder deactivation as GM's other trucks, so the AFM/DFM lifter concern applies. Any misfire or ticking should be diagnosed promptly, as it can worsen.
Is the air suspension expensive to fix?
Air and Magnetic Ride suspension can eventually need compressor, strut or shock work. It's a known luxury cost — we diagnose exactly what's needed and quote it in writing rather than replacing everything.
What about the CUE infotainment?
Older Cadillac CUE systems were prone to unresponsive or cracking screens. It's a common older-model item; we can diagnose whether it's the screen or something behind it.
